Tens of thousands of people are still without power in Scotland and northern England caused by Storm Arwen.

Northern Power said that they were trying to restore service to 40,000 customers and SP Energy Networks said that 21,000 customers were without power on Sunday, whilst Northern Powergrid said there was 1,100 instances of damage which required significant repairs.

Rod Gardner, Northern Powergrid’s major incident manager, said it had been “one of the most challenging” periods they’ve seen in over a decade.

“The storm was well forecasted and despite being prepared, Storm Arwen resulted in damage of a scale and intensity not seen for 15-years,” said Gardner.

Electricity North West said the damage caused by Storm Arwen was “devastating” as there was 83,000 properties without power at one point as they supply people from the Scottish border to Manchester.
