Sir Keir Starmer has said he will not abandon British steelworkers and the government will always โput our national interest first.โ
This comes as the US President Donald Trump has threatened a 25% tariff on steel and aluminium entering America from the EU.
Steelworkers have warned the UK industry is facing a horrific blow when President Trump imposes 25% levies on imports from next month.
Starmer told MPs he will not abandon steel workers, and he will assess what the response will be if the tariffs apply to the UK.
Starmer told MPs on Wednesday, โBritish steel is an essential part of our heartlands, and we will not abandon our skilled workforce, and it needs a level-headed assessment of the implications, which is what weโre going through at the moment.
โBut we will always put our national interest first, and steelworkers first.โ
At Prime Ministerโs Questions, Starmer said, โThe US and the UK share a strong and balanced trading relationship, we invest hugely in each otherโs economies and we will continue to work closely with President Trump to boost growth and to create jobs.โ
