Temperatures in London fell to -2C as Storm Darcy, which is dubbed “The Beast of the East 2” has frozen a large part of the River Thames.

The Thames has frozen over at Teddington, South West London which is the first time in more than a decade.

A member of the RNLI said this is a rare sight of the River Thames being frozen, and crews had to break the ice on Thursday before they could take to the water.

A spokeswoman for the RNLI said, “It’s not often the Thames freezes over in Teddington. We might have to use the D class [inflatable] lifeboat as an icebreaker.

“It’s quite spectacular. I’ve lived here for 13-years and I’ve not seen this part of the river freeze like this.”

In January 1963 the River Thames had completely frozen over, which was the coldest winter for more than 200-years which saw temperatures of -20C and blizzards.
