Sir Richard Branson grabbed headlines in the US yesterday after revealing plans to build supersonic planes that could travel at 19,000 miles an hour.

Branson claimed these planes could get you from New York to Tokyo in less than an hour, reducing plane journeys between the two cities by 12 hours.

Speaking to CNBC’s “Squawk Box” yesterday, the billionaire entrepreneur said he wants to build supersonic planes that will go “far, far, faster than” the Concorde.

“If we get it right, New York to Tokyo could be less than an hour. You could be traveling at 19,000 miles an hour orbitally,” he said.
