Airbus is working on a jet that can cover the 3,459-mile journey between London to New York in 60 minutes.

The US Patent and Trademark Office has approved Airbus’ patents of a new hypersonic aircraft. The technical term for the jet is an “ultra-rapid air vehicle and related method of aerial locomotion”.

Airbus’s superjet will fly at twice the speed of Concorde which moved at 1350 miles per hour.

According to Business Insider, the jet will use two turbojets mounted under the fuselage for take-off. A rocket motor will also be fitted at the rear.

In its application, Airbus said that the “market envisaged [for the potential new aircraft] is principally that of business travel and VIP passenger”.
