Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s longtime attorney, has released an audio recording of a conversation between him and Trump in which they discussed paying for the rights to a Playboy model’s story about an alleged affair with Trump.
Model Karen McDougal has alleged that she began a 10-month affair with Trump in 2006. Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani, however, denies this claim.
Cohen’s lawyer Lanny Davis told media that he released the recording to dispute an assertion by Giuliani that tape would show that Trump made clear that if there were going to be a payment, it should be done by check, which would be easily traced.
According to Giuliani, Trump says on the tape: “Don’t pay with cash. Check.”
In the recording, released exclusively on CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time”, Trump can be heard saying “pay with cash” but the audio is muddled and it’s unclear whether he suggests paying with cash or not paying. Cohen can be heard saying, “no, no” but it is not clear what is said next.
