The Kremlin has issued a warning to the West that should they “shoot down” any Russian warplanes this will be treated as an “act of war.”

The US President told NATO earlier this week during his speech at the UN Security Council in New York that Russian aircraft that violate the alliance’s sovereign airspace must be “shot down.”

Russian warplanes have been violating Polish, Estonian and Romanian airspace and this week drones flew over a Danish military airport.

Mark Rutte, Secretary General of Nato said that the West should shoot down Russian jets if they violate NATO’s airspace “if so necessary,” adding he agrees with Donald Trump’

The Russian ambassador to France, Alexey Meshkov warned this “would be war.”

He told RTL, “You known, there are many Nato planes that violate Russian airspace, deliberately or not, but it happens quite often. They are not shot down afterward.” However, he failed to provide any examples.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned, “The situation brings us the closest we have been to open conflict since World War Two.”

NATO has warned that Russian jets violating countries airspace is part of a “wider pattern of increasingly irresponsible Russian behaviour”.

Warsaw is now fast tracking legislation to “shoot first, ask later” to respond to Russian threats.

The Polish Prime Minister added, “We will take the decision to shoot down flying objects when they violate our territory and fly over Poland – there is absolutely no discussion about that.

“When we’re dealing with situations that aren’t entirely clear, such as the recent flight of Russian fighter jets over the Petrobaltic platform – but without any violation, because these aren’t our territorial waters – you really need to think twice before deciding on actions that could trigger a very acute phase of conflict.”

He added, “I also need to be absolutely certain… that all allies will treat this in exactly the same way as we do.”
