House of Lords calls on Labour to curb spending on disability benefits

The government has been told on Monday by the House of Lords to curb disability and incapacity benefits as this is costing more than what is spent on the Armed Forces, Reuters reported.

In the last financial year yearly spending has soared by 40% since 2013 and has hit ยฃ64.7 billion, this 20% more than what is spent on the British Armed Forces.

The House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee wrote in a letter to work and pensions minister Liz Kendall warning the that by 2029 to 2030 the forecast said the cost could hit ยฃ100 billion.

The House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee warned that this will scupper the Chancellor Rachel Reeves plans to balance the books on day-to-day spending.

The Conservative chair of the cross-party committee, George Bridges said, “Urgent action is needed to reform both the unemployment and health-related benefits system, and how they interact.โ€
