Murray on not supporting England, his mum’s singing and hopes to date Maria Sharapova

Hip Hip Murray! It’s been more than 20 hours since Andy Murray became the first British man to win at Wimbledon in 77 years and he’s still trending on Twitter.

We all saw how Murray wept with joy after beating world tennis No.1 Novak Djokovic. Last year around this time Andy Murray was seen weeping several times when Roger Federer beat him at the men’s Wimbledon final.

After winning the Wimbledon for the first time, Murray said: “That win was for myself but I also understand how much everyone else wanted to see a British winner at Wimbledon. I hope you guys enjoyed it.”

So in the honour of this tennis superstar, we pick some of his best quotes:

1. After losing to Federer in the 2012 Wimbledon final:

“I’m getting closer. If I wasn’t emotional I guess I’m probably in the wrong sport.”

2. Murray on hopes of dating Maria Sharapova in 2005

“I want to get into the top 10 – then maybe I can get a date with Maria Sharapova!”

3. Murray on annoying Tube rides and his mum’s singing

“I don’t want a flashy car, just something that would allow me to stop using the Tube. And it would be good not to have to rely on my mum all the time, particularly when I have to listen to her singing in her car.”

4. On getting a good luck call from Sir Sean Connery during Wimbledon 2006

“There’s nothing cooler than being woken up by James Bond.”

5. On supporting England at the 2006 World Cup:

“Anyone but England.”

6. After criticism on his “Anyone but England comment”:

“I made a joke, I don’t mind whether England win or lose!”

7. On his Scottish pride:

“We Scots have a fierce pride in the things we do that others can never appreciate. I am the British No.1, but I would prefer to be the British No.1 from Scotland every time.”
