A new book by Tim Shipman cliams that Cameron mocked Johnson after the latter was betrayed by fellow Leave campaigner Michael Gove.

Cameron texted Johnson saying: “You should have stuck with me, mate.”

One cabinet member told the author that Cameron was “the happiest I have seen him in a long time” on the day Gove launched his rival bid for the top job.

The book also claims Andrea Leadsom was keen to join Gove and Johnson’s leadership team. However, she dropped her plans after Johnson did not make a public statement.

It is claimed she texted Johnson to say: “I am very sorry Boris and Michael but it was very clear I needed a public statement this evening.

“I would have been really keen to work with you but I am now going to submit my nomination papers.”
