Death of the CV? Millennials snub traditional job applications

Younger millennials are increasingly ditching traditional job applications in favour of approaching companies via social media. 65% of 18 – 24 year olds worry they don’t have enough experience to include on their CV, and over half put off from applying for a job because they thought their CV will be too light.

Many companies require applicants to submit CVs and fill in detailed online applications with no promise of an interview or even response from the employer.

New Twitter data suggests savvy millennials are increasingly turning to the platform for a direct line into potential employers. #Jobs has been one of the most popular UK hashtags in the past year, amassing more than 3.3 million since August 2017. #Hiring was also one of the top UK hashtags, highlighting that employers are engaging in this conversation alongside job hunters.

44% of those surveyed like the idea of using Twitter to apply for jobs rather than writing a CV. One respondent said, “I like the idea of using Twitter because it becomes more “connected” rather than generalised email to a potential employer”. Another commented, “my Twitter shows my personality, compared to my CV, which is very professional and can be boring”.

In response to the findings, Twitter UK is offering five individuals a unique work experience opportunity at its London HQ , which can only be applied for via a single Tweet.

The successful candidates will each get to spend a day immersed within the variety of departments at Twitter UK, including Marketing, Engineering, Product, Marketing, Sales, Recruitment & Twitter Moments. The paid opportunity will also enable them to specify an area of the business they’re particularly passionate about (e.g coding) and want to explore more extensively.

To apply for the role, applicants need to Tweet using the official hashtag — #OneTweetCV.
