A top Chinese scientist has warned that coronavirus will not be eradicated and the virus will keep coming back in waves every year like the flu.
Dr Jin Qi, director of the Institute of Pathogen Biology at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing said, “This is very likely to be an epidemic that co-exists with humans for a long time, becomes seasonal and is sustained within human bodies.”
Dr Jin Qi said it is unlikely the virus will disappear as a severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) did 17-years ago.
Research shows that many who are infected are not displaying the obvious symptoms such as a fever.
The scientists say that as there are so many asymptomatic carriers of coronavirus it will be very difficult to contain the spread of the virus.
The scientist said there is little chance of finding “patient zero” which would be an “extremely difficult scientific problem that requires a great amount of interdisciplinary research.”
He added, “If patient zero is asymptomatic or has very mild symptoms, he or she may not have seen a doctor and left a medical record.”
