Yet another banking IT glitch has left thousands of customers unable to access their money this payday.
The Bank of Scotland, Lloyds, Halifax and TSB banking apps have crashed on Friday morning and the widespread outage is affecting mobile banking services across the UK
DownDetector reported that more than 4,400 Lloyds customers had registered issues accessing their banking apps around 8am on Friday morning.
Halifax customers reported more than 3,600 issues and 900 TSB customers registered problems and Bank of Scotland had some 600 customers having problems.
Martin Quinn, the director of Campaign for Cash, said, “Another week and another banking outage, we are over reliant on technology.
“But this proves that now more than ever a strong bank branch network, as when outages happen, we need face to face banking.”
A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said, “We know some customers are having issues with internet banking and our apps. We’re sorry about this and we’re working to have it back to normal soon.”
Fintech expert Chris Skinner told the PA news agency, banks are finding it โtoo hard to keep upโ with fast-moving technology.
โI think the world is spinning so fast with technology that the challenge we have is no-oneโs keeping up, particularly regulators and lawmakers,โ he said.
โSo the regulators and lawmakers need to have people who do better due diligence.
โI think thereโs an issue here with reliability, service and resilience, and thatโs the accountability of the people who are organising the structures, both from within the business, and those who look over the business in terms of the regulators.
โAt the moment, I think both are probably finding it too hard to keep up.โ
