The US President has announced on Tuesday his plans to double the tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada.
Donald Trump โinstructedโ his Secretary of Commerce to double the tariff imports from Canada from 25% to 50%, this will take effect on Wednesday.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, “I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25 per cent Tariff, to 50 per cent, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.”
The US President said that Canada is โone of the highestโ tariff nations in the world and warned the country if they do not lower their โlong-timeโ tariffs he will โsubstantially increaseโ levies on cars being imported to America.
Trump said this move will โessentially, permanently shut downโ Canadaโs manufacturing of cars, which is in response to Ontarioโs decision to slap tariffs on electricity exports to America.
Trump then said he will declare โa national emergency on electricity.โ
He then threatened if tariffs on agricultural projects are not lowered then Washington will raise taxes on the car sector.
Trump warned Ontario, “which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada.โ
Trump wrote, โCanada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous.
โI will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area.”
A Canadian politician Doug Ford said that from Monday tariffs on electricity prices will rocket by 25% which will affect 1.5 million homes and businesses in New York, Michigan and Minnesota in the US in response to Trump.
Ford told reporters in a news briefing, “If the United States escalates, I wonโt hesitate to raise this charge further or even cut off electricity entirely.โ
He added, “I take no pleasure in this decision, I feel for the American people, who did not start this trade war. There is only one person responsible: President Trump.”
