Everybody wants to hit it big and win the jackpot when they play Slots. But not everyone knows the difference between the types of jackpots on offer across different games.

Whether the game you’re playing has a fixed or progressive jackpot can make a big difference, with some players preferring one or the other based on their odds.

To help you choose which kinds of Jackpot Slots you’d rather play, read on as we set out the details of the two main kinds of jackpot and how they each work.

Fixed jackpots

The more common of the two is the fixed jackpot, which is a set amount of money on offer for the player who gets the right winning combo. No matter how many times a slot machine is used the size of its jackpot will stay the same.

In land-based casinos, you’ll typically see a fixed jackpot displayed on the game, with the amount set by the developer.

The fact that a fixed jackpot doesn’t increase over time is its main feature. No matter when they give the Slots a spin or how much they wager, players know that they have the same chances of winning that amount as anyone else. All they can do is hope that the reels land on the right combination of high-value symbols.

In general, fixed jackpots are smaller than progressive jackpots by design. While there’s no guarantee of when a slot machine will pay out the odds of winning a fixed jackpot are better than winning a progressive one.

Progressive jackpots

The other main type of jackpot is the progressive, which rises in value over time as more players use the slot machines in the linked network. All the machines or online instances of a certain Slots game will go towards a total jackpot that could be won by any individual spin.

Every time someone plays on a slot machine with a progressive jackpot a small percentage of their wager goes towards the overall jackpot, allowing it to continue growing with every spin. This means that a progressive jackpot has the potential to rise far higher than a fixed one.

It’s pretty similar to how the lottery works, with the total jackpot growing bigger and bigger until someone wins it.

Progressive jackpots come in a few different forms, depending on how many machines are linked to the payout. Standalones are only linked to one slot machine, with local progressives drawing on machines or game instances within the same casino or site.

The biggest progressive jackpots are known as wide-area, with their games linked across multiple venues or casinos. Some games even link up to other Slots developed under the same brand, giving the total jackpot the chance to rise even higher.

These jackpots don’t only go up, as the number will drop back to a seed amount after someone wins.

Whether you’re playing on a slot machine with a fixed or progressive jackpot there’s still the chance to land a large payout. It’s up to you if you’d rather stick to Slots that offer the same potential payout or want to try the higher odds of a progressive jackpot game.
