The Prime Minister is set to sign a joint declaration for a “free and open trade” following economic turmoil caused by the US President’s sweeping tariffs.
This signals that Labour is starting a “relations reset” with the European Union and a draft statement reads the government are committed to a “new strategic partnership” with Brussels with “shared principles of maintaining global economic stability,” in what many see as a snub to Trump.
Politico reported the document says, “We confirmed our shared principles of maintaining global economic stability and our mutual commitment to free and open trade.”
The Cabinet Office said the “free and open trade” with Brussels is not a snub to the US President.
A Government spokesman said, “The Government rejects the premise that it must choose between our European and American allies.”
The EU’s Maros Sefcovic met with Nick Thomas-Symonds, the minister in charge of EU negotiations and the Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds in London.
Sefcovic said the meeting was a “productive exchange on securing balanced trade relationships” prior to the upcoming May summit.
He added, “We discussed the state of international trade and the road ahead.”
