The French President and the Prime Minister will meet each other this week as summit in London this week where it is expected Sir Keir Starmer will announce plans for the French police to do more to stop small boats crossing the English Channel.
However, a wider deal to return asylum seekers is still ongoing.
It is believed that French officials are finalising what they can do with the boats full of migrants in water by the beach.
Starmer and Emmanuel Macron might set out plans for a โone in, one outโ which will see one migrant being allowed to stay in the UK and another returned, however, British officials believe this is unlikely.
Starmerโs deputy spokesperson said, โWe expect to make progress on a wide range of issues and joint priorities, and that includes migration.
โIโm not going to get ahead of the summit this week, but there are a range of maritime tactics that we have been discussing and have secured agreement with the French over.
โIt is operationally and legally complicated, but we expect these tactics to be operationalised soon.
โItโs for French authorities to make operational decisions for themselves, but as I say, itโs a complex area, but we are working extremely closely with the French. Our relationship with them is better than it has been for a long time.โ
UK government source said, โWe want to get it right. Signing it during the visit would be ideal, but it would be even more ideal to make sure it works properly.โ
