German car manufacturers come up trumps, as one in nine drivers across London voted for Audi as their preferred car of choice, according to new research by the peer-to-peer car sharing marketplace, Turo.

BMW and Mercedes Benz ranked joint second, both receiving 10 percent of the vote each.

Despite drivers across the UK longing for a German automotive machine, the most commonly owned make in the capital was a Ford (16%), which is consistent with The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders stating that the Ford Puma is the most sold new car in 2023. This was followed by Toyota (11%) and Vauxhall (9%).

Londoners are making do with cars they don’t love

Almost half (40%) of drivers across London said their current car isn’t their preferred choice. If money were no object, London drivers said that they desired size over all else, with one in six (17%) wanting an SUV, followed jointly by sports cars (16%) and electric cars (16%).

Xavier Collins, Turo’s Vice President & Head of UK said, “Audi’s are among the most booked cars on our platform in the UK, so it’s no surprise to see them rank so highly.

“But drivers don’t have to be able to own their favourite car to drive it, in fact they don’t have to own a car at all. Thousands of people take to Turo everyday to take the car of their dreams for a spin or even just for everyday activities.

“We offer the chance to hire specific cars for different occasions, for example for a 4×4 for getting out of the city into the countryside, or a Mercedes to arrive at a wedding in style.”
