According to analysts at Kantar grocery price inflation has increased for the first time since March 2023 as supermarket prices rose by 1.8% over in the month to August, compared to 1.6% in July.

There is a mixed picture in supermarkets, across some 182 products prices have risen, baked beans and kitchen towels are 5% and 7% respectively than 2023.

Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar, said, โ€œHaving reached its lowest rate in almost three years in July, August saw inflation nudge up again slightly.

โ€œWhile this is noticeable following 17 straight months of falling rates, it actually marks a return to the average levels seen in the five years before the start of the cost-of-living crisis.

โ€œWith this kind of pricing spread, shoppers will find that the type of product theyโ€™re putting in their baskets will really dictate how much they pay.โ€
