Fast food delivery firms have pledged to ramp up “verification checks” to stop illegal immigrants from working illegally.
An investigation by The Sun revealed that within 10 minutes of asking through social media groups they are offered work illegally.
Border security minister Dame Angela Eagle said: “This Government will not turn a blind eye to illegal working.
“It undercuts honest business, hits people’s wages and plays into the hands of the people smuggling gangs.
“I welcome Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats’ pledge to increase facial verification checks following today’s roundtable. We will keep a close eye on their progress and continue discussions.”
Employment rights minister Justin Madders added: “Illegal working opens the door to mistreatment and exploitation, undercutting legal workers in the process by driving down wages and working conditions.”
A Deliveroo spokesperson said the firm takes a “zero tolerance approach” to abuse on the platform and that despite measures put in place over the last year, “criminals continue to seek new ways to abuse the system”.
The Sun newspaper revealed that those who are providing the accounts to the migrants are guaranteeing they will not be caught.
The newspaper said an undercover reporter who claimed to be from Afghanistan and had crossed the Channel said they were “quickly flooded with offers from all over the country.”
The Sun published photographic evidence of the migrant me leaving the taxpayers hotels wearing branded bags.
The Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp wrote on X there is “clear evidence” that these migrants are working illegally for Just Eat, Uber Eats and Deliveroo.
Philp wrote, “These illegal immigrants are not allowed to work as delivery drivers while their asylum claim is pending, but when I looked in the bike store in the hotel, I saw delivery bags for Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats on the bikes.
“Please can you commit to removing any driver … as a courier who does not have the right to work in the UK, including at this hotel site and elsewhere. I would be grateful if you could set out what further specific steps you will take (above what you currently do, which is evidently not working) in relation to this site and more generally to prevent illegal working.”
