The Reform UK leader Nigel Farage responded to Trump’s 10% tariffs on Britain, saying the UK’s decision to leave the EU has provided the country with major benefits.
The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has said on Thursday there is “no winner in a trade war” and Trump’s announcement is “deeply troubling for businesses.”
Farage wrote on social media, “Ten per cent tariffs from the USA are bad news, but better than 20 per cent for EU members.
“If the Tory Government had delivered quickly on Brexit we would have had a free trade deal years ago. This deal is still achievable.”
Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffith said, “US tariffs are disappointing news which will worry working families across the country. But our Brexit freedoms have saved us from the worst.”
He added, “The silver lining is that Brexit – which Labour ministers voted against 48 times – means we face far lower tariffs than the EU: a Brexit dividend protecting thousands of British jobs and businesses.”
Rain Newton-Smith, CEO, CBI, said, “Business has been clear: there are no winners in a trade war. Today’s announcements are deeply troubling for businesses and will have significant ramifications around the world.
“A cool and calm reaction from the UK Government is the right response: UK firms need a measured and proportionate approach which avoids further escalation. Retaliation will only add to supply chain disruption, slow down investment, and stoke volatility in prices.
“The government has rightfully tried to negotiate a carveout to any incoming tariffs through a bilateral economic deal. As they seek to grow the economy, negotiating stronger trading relationships with all like-minded partners will be foundational to any success.
“The UK must use this unpredictable period to double down on its commitment to free, fair and open trade. Doing so will provide businesses with the confidence needed to kickstart growth, foster innovation, and boost productivity.”
