Europe will arm themselves ‘more wisely and faster’ and Russia ‘will lose’ the arms race

6th Mar 25 3:16 pm

The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said that Europe will arm themselves “more wisely and faster” than ever before as Russia has started a “new arms race.”

Tusk told EU leaders at the Brussels summit with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky it is in Europe’s interests to build “one well-coordinated military power.”

Tusk told EU leaders that “Europe must take up this challenge, this arms race, and it must win it.”

Writing on X, Tusk said, “The war, the geopolitical uncertainty and the new arms race started by Putin have left Europe with no choice.

“Europe must be ready for this race, and Russia will lose it like the Soviet Union 40 years ago. From today, Europe will arm itself more wisely and faster than Russia.”

On Thursday Polish and Lithuanian leaders were positive over the French President Emmanuel Macron’s suggestion of extending their nuclear umbrella to protect European counterparts.

Macron said that Europe can no longer rely on America despite them being part of NATO and he wants to make a start of “strategic discussions” on protecting Europe from Russia’s nuclear threats.

Tusk told reporters on the sidelines of the Brussels summit, “This readiness of France, this is something very promising.

“We have to treat this proposal seriously.”

A stronger European defence is a boost for Ukrainian defence, and a stronger capacity of Ukraine’s defence is also important (for boosting) our own defence,” European Council President Antonio Costa said.

“This is a watershed moment for Europe… Europe faces clear and present danger,” von der Leyen said.

“And this is the reason why I present today to the leaders the ReArm Europe plan. The ReArm Europe plan provides up to 800 billion euros ($860 billion) for defence investment,” von der Leyen added.

President Zelensky thanked the European leaders for their “strong support” for Ukraine, he added, “You made a strong signal to Ukrainian people, to Ukrainian warriors, civilians, to our families, and it is great that we are not alone. We know it, and we feel it.”
