California and Alaska hit with evacuation orders after Russian earthquake sparks tsunami warning

A huge 8.7 magnitude earthquake hit east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on Tuesday evening which has triggered tsunami warnings across dozens of countries.

The earthquake which hit Russiaโ€™s east-southeast region is thought to be one of the most strongest quakes on record.

Japanโ€™s Hokkaido region was the first country to be hit, then Russiaโ€™s Kuril Islands then the tsunami started to cross the Pacific Ocean.

Hawaii, parts of California and Alaskaโ€™s Aleutian Islands have received evacuation orders as a tsunami warning has bee issued.

Early on Wednesday morning the first waves from the tsunami hit Kauaiโ€™s Hanalei Bay and at Haleiwa Boat Harbor on Oahuโ€™s North Shore then Hawaii some ten minutes later with waves up to 4 foot tall.

The US President Donald Trump said on Truth Social for Americans to โ€œSTAY STRONG AND STAY SAFE!โ€

In Alaska the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrationโ€™s issued their most severe alert for western Aleutian Islands to the Pribilof Islands.

The British Foreign Office said, “An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.7 has struck the eastern coast of Russia in the Kamchatka Peninsula region.

A tsunami threat message has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

If you are in the affected areas, potentially affected by the earthquake or tsunami, you should follow the advice of the local authorities.”
