British ambassador to US splits from Labour over Ukraine, ‘what is he up to?’ asks Davey

The British ambassador to Washington Lord Peter Mandelson seems to have spilt from Labour and is backing the US President Donald Trump over Ukraine.

Labour has said that Lord Mandelson backing Trump’s Ukraine peace deal is “not government policy” after he told the US broadcaster ABC News that the Ukrainian President and Europe must all provide their “unequivocal backing to the initiative President Trump is taking” for his proposed peace deal.

He added, “Ukraine should be first to commit to a ceasefire and defy the Russians to follow.”

The Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey asked, “What is Mandelson up to?

“You cannot square what the Prime Minister said this morning with this. What is the Government’s actual position?

“Our man in DC should be securing US protection for our brave Ukrainian allies, not telling President Zelensky what to do.”

Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard was asked if Mandelson’s comment is inline with the government’s policy, he told Sky News, “No. It’s certainly right that Ukrainians want peace. I think of all the people on our continent that want peace, the Ukrainians want it the most.”

When asked if Lord Mandelson comments were misguided, Pollard said, “That’s not Government policy, and you wouldn’t expect me to commentate on every up and down in negotiations.”
