Goldsmith vs Cameron in Heathrow showdown
The Conservative Party’s mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith has warned party leader David Cameron that a decision to back Heathrow expansion would be an “enormous betrayal”.
In 2009, Cameron ruled out expanding Heathrow saying “no ifs, no buts, no third runway”.
But now the government is mulling expanding the west London airport after the Airports Commission recommended a third runway as the best option.
Goldsmith, who is MP for the nearby Richmond Park constituency, reiterated his promise to resign as an MP if Cameron backtracks.
Cameron had promised a response to the Airports Commission by the end of this year, though it appears this will no longer happen.
Goldsmith cited air pollution concerns, saying that “the Volkswagen scandal has changed everything”, when it comes to emissions data.
Goldsmith is expected to demand a further study on the environmental impact of the airport’s expansion.
