Leaning against the dispatch box yesterday, George Osborne proudly announced: “I can report that Britain is currently growing faster than any other major advanced economy. Faster than France, which is contracting, faster than Germany, faster even than America.”
On his right, Cameron continued his hour of radiant nodded approval.
The UK economy, which has grown by 0.8% between July and September, is higher than any other European country, and at the time of his speech, was indeed higher than America’s official figure of 0.7% quarter-on-quarter growth.
But just two hours later, that final pronouncement proved false, as America sharply upped its growth figures to 0.9% for the third quarter.
Well, it was good while it lasted eh George?
