The UKs coronavirus death toll has rocketed by 260 in a single day bringing the total to 1,019 on Saturday. The Department for Health has said there are now 17,089 confirmed cases across the UK, up by 2,335 in 24 hours.

NHS England has said the victims were aged between 33 and 100-years old. Only 13 of the victims had underlying health conditions out of the 260 deaths.

The majority of the deaths were in England, whilst Scotland had another seven deaths with the total now standing at 40. Across Wales the death toll rose by four with the total being 38.

Government officials have warned that stricter social distancing measures are set to happen from next month.

These measures are set to happen within three weeks when it is predicted that the UK would have reached its peak, to further reduce “person-to-person interaction.”

A public health expert has said he believe the UK will the left with a “high burden of coronavirus cases” following the governments handling to the outbreak.

Dr Gabriel Scally, president of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Royal Society of Medicine in London, said across the UK there will be populations with high exposure to coronavirus.

Health experts are urging the government to change their response to the virus.

Local authorities are under increasing pressure as the UK death toll is rising, and councils across the country are considering to open mass graves.

Academics from the University of Huddersfield have warned in a new paper, that if just 1% of the UKs population die from coronavirus then it is highly likely councils will not be able to cope.

Death and bereavement services throughout the UK are likely to be overwhelmed in a major increase in deaths, and could struggling with issuing death certificates.

The experts warn their will be a major bottleneck in funeral services with mortuaries operating beyond maximum capacity.

Birmingham City Council announced on Friday they are building a morgue at Birmingham airport, which can hold up to 12,000 bodies.
