The blame game: npower says old draughty houses to blame for high bills

Big Six energy firm npower has said that the UK’s “old and draughty” houses are to blame for high gas and electricity bills.

npower chief executive Paul Massara said that the UK’s energy prices were among the lowest in Europe, but the amount customers were paying was among the highest because “British houses waste so much energy”.

In the firm’s “Energy Explained” report, Massara said: “If we can increase the efficiency of the UK’s old and draughty housing, we can ensure that annual energy bills are some of the lowest too.”

The report warned that the UK will see higher energy prices as a result of upgrading its energy infrastructure.

npower increased their bills by 10% last year, as all Big Six firms pushed up prices. But prices are set to come down somewhat as green levies are stripped from consumers’ energy bills.

Massara’s remarks are likely to cause fresh outrage, as last week it was revealed that the company had again topped the table for most complained about energy company, receiving eight times as many complaints as fellow Big Six operator SSE.
