So there’s a hippo in the Thames…

Yes you read that headline right.

There’s a giant hippo in the River Thames and it’s staying put for the whole of September.

Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, who is known for his giant rubber duck, created the sculpture on the river at Nine Elms as part of Totally Thames – a 30 day festival hosting 100 events over 42 miles of the river.

The hippo, called HippopoThames, is inspired by the river’s prehistoric history, as fossil evidence suggests hippopotamuses roamed the Thames back when it had a more Mediterranean climate.

UPDATE: (2.33pm) We’ve just found out it will reach the base of St George’s Tower in Vauxhall at 5.30 today where there will be a free celebratory event with food, drinks and activities. Enjoy!
