Ouch. Tesco closes remaining homeware stores

Closure of six Homeplus stores will see the loss of 450 jobs

It’s just one thing after another for Tesco. The troubled supermarket has been regularly making headlines for more than a year and today is no different.

The supermarket has announced it is winding down all six remaining Homeplus stores at a cost of 450 jobs.

Homeplus sold clothing, electrical goods and furniture and has stores in Bristol, Bracknell, Nottingham, Denton, Bromborough and Preston, which will all close next month.

Tesco said: “We’ve taken the difficult decision to close our remaining six Homeplus stores. Our priority is now to explain what this announcement means for our colleagues and wherever possible, offer them alternative roles with Tesco.”

The retailer has been implementing dramatic cost-cutting measures after its poor annual results. In the year to February, Tesco made a £6.4bn loss – the biggest in its history.
