Obama: UK exit of EU would diminish Britain’s global influence

US President Barack Obama has warned that Britain would lose global influence if it left the European Union.

Speaking to the BBC, Obama said that Britain’s membership of the EU “gives us much greater confidence about the strength of the transatlantic union and is part of the cornerstone of institutions built after [the]Second World War that has made the world safer and more prosperous.”

Obama’s view echoes that of Prime Minister David Cameron, who, despite promising a referendum on EU membership in the next two years, plans to lead a campaign for Britain to stay in a reformed union.

Obama described the UK as America’s “best partner”, and said this was due to the country’s desire to use its influence beyond “immediate self-interests to make this a more orderly, safer world”.
