iPhone 5 orders smash 2 million in first day

Apple breaks records with pre-orders for iPhone 5

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 have soared past two million in the first 24 hours as shoppers flocked to reserve the latest Apple gadget.

This is more than twice as fast as the previous record of one million for the iPhone 4s.

However, some shoppers may be in for disappointment as Apple has reported worldwide demand well in excess of initial supply. According to reports, Apple’s initial inventory of iPhone 5 handsets was exhausted and sold out within the first hour.

Many are set to receive their iPhones on September 21st while others may have to wait till October.

“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing.
