Driverless cars to hit public roads in UK by 2015

Driverless cars could hit public roads in the UK as early as next year. The government is drawing up plans to trial the vehicles and Business Secretary Vince Cable is set to announce further measures to boost research.

The Department for Transport had previously said that public trials would take place by the end of 2013, but testing did not go ahead.

In December the government said a £10m prize would be awarded to a town or city that becomes a testing area for autonomous vehicles.
