Amazon is trialling an unusual method of boosting productivity and morale in its US warehouses. The giant internet retailer is offering employees generous severance packages to leave the company.
Anyone who has worked for the company for less than a year will be offered $2,000 to walk out of the door, and the figure rises by $1,000 for every year an employee has worked there, up to five years, at $5,000.
But this is not part of a plan for mass redundancy, rather it is to free up positions in the company from de-motivated employees so fresh blood can come in.
Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos said: “The goal is to encourage folks to take a moment and think about what they really want.
“In the long run, an employee staying somewhere they don’t want to be isn’t healthy for the employee or the company.”
