Alibaba’s Jack Ma no longer China’s richest person… so who is?

Jack Ma slips down to third place

China’s richest billionaire is no longer Jack Ma (pictured above), according to the Hurun Global Rich List – so who is?

With a fortune of $26bn, renewable power entrepreneur Li Hejun is China’s richest person.

He’s followed by real estate tycoon Wang Jianlin at number two. Jack Ma, at number three, has a personal wealth of $24.5bn.

Who is Li Hejun?

The owner of a hydropower, wind power, and solar energy power generation company, Li Hejun is the biggest name in thin-film solar panels and equipment.

He’s worth $26bn. His company is Hanergy Group.

Last year, Li predicted more than half of the world’s energy would come from renewable sources by 2035, and he’s looking to continue to invest – particular in solar, he’s said.

Despite making number one on the list, Li has come under criticism after the Financial Times reported that his firm Hanergy Group was involved in “unconventional practices” with its subsidiary Hanergy Thin Film Power Group.

Though more billionaires have come from China in the past year than anywhere else in the world, only one person from Greater China made it into the global top 20 billionaires – a list dominated by Americans.

Bill Gates topped the global list with a net worth of $83bn.

Hong Kong’s Li Ka-shing came in at number 16 with a $32bn fortune.
